Brent Burlingham's 1970 GT6

When I retired in 2017 I decided to look for a sports car as a retirement gift to myself. I was actually looking for what would have been my fifth Opel GT, but noticed a Kijiji ad for a somewhat rare 1970 Triumph GT6+ in Elfros, SK.

My first car as a teenager was an MGB, so I had a soft spot for British sports cars. As it turns out, I’m very glad I didn’t find an Opel GT – purchasing the GT6+ has resulted in a journey that introduced me to the Saskatchewan British Car Club and it’s enthusiastic, knowledgeable and helpful members.

This car was actually part of the history of the SBCC. Club member John Butler purchased the GT6+ in 1999, and embarked on a complete frame-off restoration. In what has since become a hallmark of the SBCC’s community spirit, it was the first club project of the SBCC twenty four years ago.

John Butler sadly passed away in 2012, but I was fortunate to meet his wife Chris who recognized the car immediately by it’s custom birdseye maple dash. John was a woodworking teacher at Aden Bowman, and the dash and side panels were his pride and joy. Chris provided the following photos of the restoration process, which included a new frame, complete rewiring and a down-to-the-metal British Racing Green paint job.

I have come to feel like I’m just looking after the car for John. He put so much time and energy into restoring it that it will always be his GT6+. Thank you John!
